Terlingua Brewing Company
Terlingua Brewing Co. is a concept I created for a beer company. The brand is inspired by west Texas, and the wildlife that inhabits the area. Terlingua, TX is located right outside of Big Bend National Park, and is almost as refreshing and relaxing as these beverages.
The Challenge
To create a beer company with a cool aesthetic, a good concept, and consistency. I want the brand’s image to transport people to the desert plains of west Texas, while also maintaining the look of a quality, refreshing beer.
The Goal
To create a variety of different beers that work together cohesively, but different enough to make each label unique. This would include designs for the labels, packaging, and other branded goods.
Target Audience
The target audience would be people 21 or older with an appreciation for craft brews, nature, adventure, and might just be a native Texan.
Process
The first thing I wanted to nail down for the brand was the logo. The logo would give me a good representation for the brand’s aesthetic. I began by sketching ideas.
Once I identified my strongest sketches, I began to digitize them to create the logo, and build out my toolbox of branding elements by rearranging the wordmark and developing additional graphic elements.
Now that I had my logo down, I started to sketch ideas for the label designs. I knew that I wanted a different animal from the Texas wildlife on each can. I chose to go with a roadrunner, a javelina, and of course an armadillo.
The next step was to digitize, and bring the animals to life.
With the addition of the wildlife animals for the labels, I worked out a color palette to pair them with. I pulled colors from the west Texas landscapes and skies. To add texture to the cans, I created subtle patterns in the background of different desert elements like cacti, yucca, and snakes.
Solution
Now that I had a cohesive set of label designs, I began to mock them up, and think of ways I could expand on the brand. Thinking of the whole experience, I designed the packaging the beers would come in, and additional pieces of merchandise that could go with the brand.
Reflection
This project was so much fun to work on, and bring to life. I’ve always enjoyed visiting Terlingua and the west Texas landscape. I definitely feel inspired after being there, and this company’s brand pulled all of my favorite aspects of the area and brought them together.
