AIGA Design Conference

This project allowed me to develop the branding and feeling for the whole experience of this design conference. AIGA is a legendary organization that is all about design and the design community, so I really had to this justice.

The Challenge

Each year this conference is held, there is a different theme. This year’s theme was “bridges”, and the challenge would be to a way to incorporate that theme all across the signage and other deliverables to take home from the conference.

The Goal

The goal for creating the branding for this event was to incorporate a visually interesting system that could convey bridges, and not be repetitive. Also given that AIGA is already a brand of its own, I would need to make it fit in with their aesthetic as well.

Target Audience

The target audience would really be anyone who is a graphic designer and is active in the design community. This audience would also include any aspiring designers or fans of the guest speakers.

Process

To start off this project, I began to gather inspiration from past event posters, and sketched out anything bridge-related that I could think of. I sketched some both on paper and digitally in order to see what colors would look like once incorporated in the design.

Throughout sketching, I realized that it wouldn’t be as interesting of a design if I displayed bridges in the more literal sense. My peers agreed as well. Instead, I went with a more abstract representation with lines that mimic the curves bridges can have, and the waves of water that bridges can pass over.

The designs would have two different colored, but harmonious backgrounds. Backgrounds that could support the red and blue colors, and could be used to differentiate certain signage, and add variety.

Solution

Once I had digitized my sketches, and brought in a strong color palette, I then thought of ways the wavy bridge lines could exist throughout the branding system. Using these lines, I had freedom to create different patterns and ways to support information for the conference.

Reflection

I loved the opportunity to take on the challenge of creating branding for something as big as an AIGA event would be. The scale of the event, and the amount of things you take home from these events helped me think of different ways to blow out the brand.  Also given the unique theme of “bridges” was definitely a fun challenge to work with, and a new kind of design experience.
